Step-by-Step Rock Bolt Installation:

1. **Site Assessment**:

- Assess the rock condition and load requirements to determine the type, length, and spacing of rock bolts needed.

 

2. **Drilling the Hole**:

- Use a drilling machine to create a hole in the rock. The hole's diameter and depth must be appropriate for the type and length of rock bolt being used.

- Typically, the hole is drilled at a slight upward angle (5-10°) to help prevent water from entering.

 

3. **Cleaning the Hole**:

- After drilling, clean the hole to remove dust, debris, and loose particles. This is essential for proper bolt anchoring, especially for resin or grout applications. Use compressed air or a hole brush for cleaning.

 

4. **Inserting the Rock Bolt**:

- **For mechanical anchor bolts (expansion bolts)**: Insert the bolt into the drilled hole. As you tighten the nut, the expansion shell at the end of the bolt will expand, anchoring it into the rock.

- **For grouted rock bolts**: Before inserting the bolt, pump cement grout or resin into the hole. Insert the bolt into the hole while rotating it, ensuring proper distribution of grout around the bolt.

- **For friction bolts (split sets or Swellex)**: Insert the bolt into the hole, which expands radially due to friction, creating immediate support. Hydraulic pressure may be applied to expand the Swellex bolts.

 

5. **Tightening the Bolt**:

- Use a torque wrench to tighten the nut on the rock bolt to the specified torque value. This ensures that the bolt is properly tensioned, providing the necessary support to the surrounding rock.

 

6. **Grouting (if applicable)**:

- In the case of fully grouted rock bolts, after inserting the bolt, pump additional grout into the hole to fill any remaining voids. Ensure the grout is evenly distributed to bond the bolt to the rock.

 

7. **Quality Control and Testing**:

- Check the tension or load on the installed rock bolts with a pull test or torque wrench to ensure they meet the designed specifications.

 

8. **Documentation and Monitoring**:

- Record the bolt's installation details (location, type, torque applied, and grouting materials used) for future reference. Regularly monitor the bolts, especially in high-stress environments.

 

Safety Precautions:

- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

- Make sure the drill hole is not too large for the bolt, as this could reduce effectiveness.

- Avoid over-tensioning the bolt, which can lead to breakage or damage to the rock mass.
